Hi good morning, we welcome you to the web and are discussing the leadership program at John Carroll University. I am Colleen Sommerfeld. I'm the assistant Dean for graduate studies and I coordinate admission into the program. I am here with doctor. Lisa show who was a program coordinator for the Ed Leadership program. We have a variety of slides to share with you about curriculum application process today and we also will be taking questions along the way so if you have those make sure you type into your.
Chat box and will be sure to address any questions back come up and so right now. I'm going to turn the microphone over at 2:00 doctor, Lisa Shope, who's going to share some of the highlights about our Ed Leadership Program.
Good morning, and thank you for attending our web and R regarding the educational leadership program at John Carroll University. I want to begin by providing an overview of the program.
Our our education Department. It's actually the Department of Education in school psychology at John Carroll is Cape accredited. We just completed our accreditation last year and we are nationally recognized in terms of our licensing programs where the largest graduate Department at John Carroll University are at leadership program and other programs are community focused in their training models.
We will individually individually Taylor programs, according to your needs through our assignments and readings and study.
We have a commitment to diversity and we incorporate evidence based training throughout our program.
As stated earlier John Carroll is a leader in the teacher education programs are at leadership program has been nationally recognized. There are some other unique qualities about a certificate of assessment and accountability that I'll mention later in this presentation, but we work to stay updated and current and we are came accredited.
Who would be a strong candidate for the program?
If you're interested in studying an the principle licensure program. You it's best suited if you are full time teacher.
Or students with teaching experience students interested in becoming a school principle or other leadership positions and the school or district. Students interested in leadership positions in school such as athletic director pupil personnel director HR direct are curriculum. Director Central Office. Other positions related to that also sometimes students who wish to pursue coaching a reading coach or math coach.
The administrative license would benefit you as well.
Um students who wish to hold other leadership positions in private independent or charter schools, so sometimes students are interested in studying the program who wanna work and these types of schools and the license sure teaching license isn't necessarily required in that setting and that's OK to study in the program as well as long as you understand that the state of Ohio requires 2 years of teaching for principles license but you can earn your Masters degree.
If you're interested in using that degree for private independent or charter schools.
In the educational leadership program students can earn their Masters degree in Ed Leadership. They learn a principle licensure, which does require an additional 2 years of teaching experience through the requirement of Ohio Department of Education for that life principle licensure. And in our program. There's a certificate of assessment and accountability. So you can choose just to study the licensure only if you like.
But all these options are available. the Masters degree the licensure and the certificate of assessment and accountability.
If you already have a Masters degree.
As I stated earlier could just choose to pursue the licensure. The Certificate of assessment and accountability is incorporated into the licensure requirements. So you would earn that as well. The difference between the Masters in the licensure is at the Masters has a core group of courses that are a part of the Masters program and the student has to take and pass the comprehensive exams.
The other leadership program at John Carroll is a 2 year program. It's a total of 5 semesters. There is 1 summer session between year one and year 2 that is required. The program is a hybrid model, there are some on line classes and there are some classes that are hybrid that made on campus. Students can expect to be on campus. Every other Monday evening when you're taking a hybrid.
You will not be taking more than 2 classes at one time, one class. One of the hybrid courses would be for the first half of the semester and then the second hybrid course would start up halfway through the semester continued through the end of the term the Iron Line Course is for the whole duration of the semester and that way are able to juggle. The nine credit hours and maintain your full time work position as a teacher.
This is an overview of the courses required for the Masters Program, I referred to earlier that there are there is a core group of course is for the Masters and that would be the multicultural education course. The research methods course. The 8502 and then if you drop down a little. The Ed 5:30 for the learning teaching is also required for the Masters Core. The other courses are part of our at leadership and licensure program.
And those with an Astrex decided also qualify for the certificate of assessment and accountability that has been woven into the ETH leadership program.
Coming more specific about the assessment assessment and accountability certificate courses for this certificate our research methods program evaluation test the measurements statistics.
Literacy assessment and intervention.
The reason we incorporate this certificate into the program is we feel it will make our candidates stronger at understanding and interpreting results with the amount of testing that is conducted in schools. It will prepare you in terms of value added assessing any program that you might put in place such as an after school intervention program or a tutoring program to have the knowledge and competency to assess that program and decide if it's working.
And how to set new goals for the program so throughout your course work will be viewing it through the lens of assessment and accountability, which is unique to John Carroll and unique in this area and an additional certificate.
Whereas other programs may require it after their Masters. We we incorporate this into our masters and my suggestion Carol.
As I shared a little bit earlier, the purpose of this certificate of assessment accountability is to help prepare leaders to make database decisions. Foster ongoing program evaluation and improvement in gold siding evaluate quality research and feel confident to lead based on the data. You've collected in your building and knowing how to use and apply the data.
I often receive questions about the internship specifically students or interested candidates are concerned if they will have to leave their full time teaching position to complete the internship.
The internship for a leadership where the principle license is different than student teaching and that you are able to work full time in your teaching position and you will complete your internship at the school or building in which you are currently working.
As assessments and requirements during the internship, but they are completed at your setting and they can be done during planning time after school you will need a principle or system principle. A licensed administrator needs to oversee you in the field. But you will not have to leave your full time teaching position.
Well, if you currently don't teach in a school and you don't know how you complete your internship. We can help you with a placement for your internship in order that you could complete that requirement for your principle licensure. We do have placement for students in schools in this area.
What do we feel makes our John Carroll educational leadership program different from others again we're proud of the certificate of assessment and accountability. That's woven through the program. We feel this will qualify you to make strong data based decisions throughout all the courses. We integrate clinical practice and we apply it to our readings that are assignments. We develop a strong understanding of leadership models and your own personal style of leadership.
You'll be exposed to different styles and you'll be required to interview principals and school leaders in the field and you'll will ask you to develop? What is your style of leadership and how would you apply that in your position?
The proposed schedule of course, is if you would take the program and stay on track is in the fall of 2019. We would offer Ed 5551 school leadership would offer research methods and learning and teaching two of these courses. The leadership and the research methods are hybrid. The learning teaching is fully on line and in the spring. We have school and community engagement.
Statistics literacy assessment intervention models, the last one is the fully online course and in the summer. The financing facilities is fully on mine the other two courses are hybrid.
The following fall of 2020 would be taking program evaluation professional development in teacher evaluation and in the spring. Lawn ethics as well as the internship as you can see the course load decreases in the second year, which allows you more time for the internship.
